Learn About COVID-19 from a Microbiologist

The incredible amount of information regarding COVID-19 can often feel overwhelming, and sorting through it can be difficult. Associate Professor Sharon Eden teaches courses in microbiology and epidemiology and is well acquainted with dealing with viruses. In a recent video, she makes several recommendations for staying healthy as well as best practices to protect yourself, your family and others.

In the video, Eden offers a brief explanation of coronaviruses and what is unique about COVID-19, the coronavirus we are dealing with now. She also explains who is at the greatest risk of contracting COVID-19 as well as which symptoms may be associated with the virus. To protect yourself and those who are at risk, Eden recommends following CDC guidelines for social distancing, staying at home as much as possible and limiting interactions with others.

Social distancing is critical, but Eden notes that there are still circumstances when you have to bring items from outside into your home—such as groceries. To help protect yourself, she walks us through how to set up a clean station where you can sanitize items coming into your home. Another helpful practice is to use paper bags for groceries, which are thought to be safer than plastic.

Keeping your home clean is also important to limit the spread of COVID-19. Eden explains that heavy duty cleaning agents such as hydrogen peroxide and bleach are the most effective when it comes to killing germs, more so than many types of sanitizing wipe products. She recommends diluting cleaning agents such as bleach with water to make them more effective.

Finally, Eden notes the importance of staying mentally and physically healthy during these times. She recommends supplements such as vitamin D3 to support your immune system and well as self-care practices to help manage stress.
